Chinese Culture to Foote Physical Education

With our great program with Yali in China, Foote school has received a wonderful teacher, Hannah, who has demonstrated some things taught in China. To our older kids Hannah is teaching our students how to do stretches and exercises done at Yali. There students perform these daily and do it all in unison, as you can see in the video above they are very difficult and our students can definitely use some work. Hannah also teaches our younger students different routine dances that resemble animals. In the pictures below you can see them doing the rooster, the cat, and the seagull. We are very lucky to have Hannah teaching us a different perspective on how they move and stay fit in other countries.

Health Power Point: Breakfast, Healthy Snacks, and Fast Food

Click on the picture to see the whole power point

This week we are sticking with the nutrition topic but moving on to breakfast, fast food options, and healthy snack choices. The first topic is breakfast, many times our students do not eat breakfast because they wake up late, don't have time, or simply don't feel like it. The purpose of today is to make them aware of the importance of getting breakfast and why our body needs it. Next is making our students aware that their are some healthy options when eating at a fast food restaurant. Many times we are busy going from school to practices, to rehearsals and fast food is the only option to get some kind of dinner. This week we talked about what to look for and how to choose a meal that is not as unhealthy for you compared to other choices. And finally snack time generally means chips, cookies, or other options high in salt and low in nutritious value. We will discuss how to choose an appropriate snack for what you are doing.

Health and Wellness Week 2 Nutrients

(click on the picture for the slide show)

This week we will be exploring the six nutrients that we consume daily and the purpose of each nutrient in the body. Understanding these nutrients will enable us to select healthier foods and consume the suggested amounts. We will also look at some nutrition labels and learn how to break therm down to read if this would be a good choice or not. And finally we will learn the true meaning of a serving size, most of us are guilty of filling an entire bowl of cereal and calling it one serving. Or going out to a restaurant and assuming that what ever is on the plate is one serving of food. This is not true and we can take a closer look at servings of commonly eaten food.

Eighth Grade Outdoor Education

Our eighth graders get the great opportunity of participating in our outdoor education program throughout the semester. This is different than our normal physical education program because our main focus is to build team work and have different leaders emerge throughout the course. A challenge is given daily and we do not move on to another challenge until that one is complete. At times groups may become frustrated with each other as well as the task, rather then quitting they work through the hard times and complete the task. The picture above is our students are participating in the task known as "toxic waste", the goal is to move the foam piece from one box to another without dropping it. The task takes concentration, communication and a slow steady pace. The picture below is our students participating in crates and boards, this activity involves lots of strategy to get from one side to the other without touching the ground and without dropping any boards. If any of the boards touch the ground they can no longer be used. Stay tuned throughout the semester as we work our way up to the high ropes elements including the "Duo Dangle."

Health and Wellness Course

This year we will be teaching a health and wellness course to all of our sixth graders one day every cycle. The course will be covering great topics that are relevant to our sixth graders lives some topics we will be covering are Nutrition/healthy life style, drugs and alcohol, stress management, healthy relationships, media influences, and social media topics. Our goal is that each student can take the information within the class and apply it to their lives and make changes, if necessary to live a healthy lifestyle. The class is going to be laid back with the hope to have deep discussions brought up by the students. Power points will be posted here weekly prior to the class so that our students have a chance to review them online.
